How this works

• Self-employment tax is 15.3 percent (12.4 percent Social Security on earnings up to $184,500 in 2026, plus 2.9 percent Medicare) on 92.35 percent of your net earnings.
• Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction for your filing status, after subtracting half of your self-employment tax.
• State tax uses the simple rate you enter.
• It leaves out the 20 percent qualified business income deduction many contractors can take, so the result leans a little high, which is the safer direction.
